I. Distinguishing Between Core Concepts of Current References and Current Sources

Within the reference source system, current references and current sources are often confused; however, there are fundamental differences in their functions, positioning and application scenarios. They represent two distinct types of basic units in analogue circuits, and TI Precision Devices clearly defines their parameters and delineates their application boundaries.

1.1 Current Reference

A current reference is a core component that provides a fixed, high-precision, low-drift reference current; its key attribute is ‘stability’ rather than ‘drive capability’. Its output current is a fixed nominal value, virtually unaffected by minor fluctuations in input voltage, load resistance or ambient temperature, and its primary function is to provide a precise current reference standard for circuits.

TI current references are generally designed based on a bandgap reference architecture, featuring an extremely low temperature coefficient (typically 10–50 ppm/°C), high initial accuracy, excellent long-term stability and extremely low quiescent power consumption. Their key characteristics are as follows:

- Output characteristics: Outputs a constant reference current; the current value is fixed and non-adjustable; the load matching range is narrow, suitable only for small loads and high-precision sampling applications;

- Core Function: Provides a precise current bias for ADCs/DACs, operational amplifiers, voltage reference cores and sampling circuits, ensuring the stability of the analogue circuit’s quiescent operating point;

- Electrical Advantages: Low temperature drift, high linearity, strong immunity to power supply interference and no output ripple, making them suitable for precision signal chains;

- Typical devices: REF200, the built-in current reference unit in the LM4040, and the high-precision bandgap reference series.

1.2 Current Source

A current source is a functional circuit or device with a certain drive capability that can output a constant current; its core attribute is ‘constant-current drive’, with the priority being to ensure stable load current. The requirements for ultimate precision and temperature drift are lower than those for current references. TI current sources are divided into two categories: integrated current sources and programmable current sources built on a reference basis.

Their key characteristics are as follows:

- Output characteristics: Capable of delivering a constant current; some programmable current sources support current adjustment via external resistors; wide load matching range; capable of driving power-type loads;

- Core functions: Driving LEDs, sensors, thermocouples and charging circuits; enabling constant-current power supply, load testing and loop control;

- Electrical characteristics: Strong driving capability and a wide output current range; however, temperature drift and initial accuracy are generally lower than those of dedicated current references, and some switch-mode current sources exhibit slight ripple;

- Typical applications: Programmable current sources based on the TL431 and REF5050, and TI’s dedicated constant-current driver ICs.

1.3 Summary of Key Differences Between the Two

Current references prioritise accuracy and stability; they serve as the circuit’s ‘current yardstick’ and do not require high-power drive capabilities. Current sources prioritise constant-current drive capability; they serve as the circuit’s ‘power supply unit’, with accuracy requirements sufficient for standard industrial applications. Furthermore, high-precision current sources must be constructed using a voltage reference plus operational amplifier architecture, with the current reference forming the core of the high-precision current source.

II. Core Classification of TI Voltage References: Series vs Parallel

A voltage reference is a reference device that outputs a fixed, precise voltage, providing a standard voltage for data conversion, voltage sampling and power supply calibration. All TI voltage references are divided into two categories: series voltage references and parallel voltage references. Their architectures correspond to LDOs and Zener diodes respectively; their circuit topologies, electrical characteristics and suitable applications are entirely different, and these differences form the core basis for hardware design selection.

2.1 Series Voltage References (Series Reference)

A series voltage reference is a three-terminal device (VIN, VOUT, GND) whose architecture closely resembles that of a low-dropout linear regulator (LDO). At its core, a controllable adjustment transistor is connected in series between the input voltage and the output load; by dynamically adjusting the internal equivalent resistance, it compensates for fluctuations in the input voltage and changes in the load, thereby maintaining a constant output voltage.

2.1.1 Operating Principle

The series reference operates in series with the load. The input voltage VIN is processed by the device’s internal regulation unit to stabilise the output at a fixed VREF voltage. The device itself bears the voltage difference between the input and output, and the load current is supplied entirely by the series reference. No external voltage-dividing or current-limiting resistors are required, and the reference voltage is stable immediately upon power-up. An integrated temperature-compensated bandgap core enables high-precision voltage regulation across a wide temperature range.

2.1.2 Key Advantages

- Minimal setup: No external resistors are required; the device operates with only input and output filter capacitors, minimising accuracy loss caused by device drift;

- Controllable power consumption: Extremely low quiescent current, coupled with minimal power consumption under no-load and light-load conditions, making it suitable for battery-powered, low-power applications;

- Superior accuracy: High initial accuracy, extremely low temperature drift, low output noise and excellent long-term stability, making it the preferred choice for precision signal chains;

- Strong load adaptability: Can directly provide a reference voltage for ADCs and DACs; offers moderate load-carrying capacity; and exhibits minimal voltage fluctuations under dynamic loads.

2.1.3 Limitations

- Subject to a maximum input voltage limit; input overvoltage may damage the device, making it unsuitable for high-voltage applications with extreme voltage fluctuations;

- Cannot provide a negative reference output; the topology only supports positive reference voltages;

- The price is higher than that of standard parallel references, making them generally less suitable for cost-sensitive applications.

2.1.4 Typical Devices and Application Scenarios

TI’s mainstream series-connected references: REF30E, REF50xx, and REF53-Q1 automotive-grade series. These are primarily used for high-precision ADC/DAC sampling, instrumentation, medical equipment, high-precision sensor signal calibration, and low-power portable devices.

2.2 Shunt Voltage References

Shunt voltage references are two-terminal or three-terminal adjustable devices. Their operating principle is consistent with that of a Zener diode; the device is connected in parallel with the load, and the core regulates the voltage by shunting current to maintain a constant voltage at the parallel node. This is a classic voltage-regulating reference architecture.

2.2.1 Operating Principle

A current-limiting resistor must be connected in series during operation. The input voltage is stepped down via the current-limiting resistor and then applied in parallel with the reference device and the load. When the input voltage rises or the load current decreases, the shunt current through the device increases, raising the voltage drop across the current-limiting resistor; conversely, the shunt current decreases, ultimately maintaining a stable output reference voltage. The output voltage of a three-terminal shunt reference can be flexibly programmed via external voltage-divider resistors.

2.2.2 Key Advantages

- Extremely high flexibility: Supports wide-range voltage programming and can output positive, negative and floating-ground references, making it suitable for specialised circuit topologies;

- Strong voltage tolerance: Wide input voltage range and high resistance to voltage fluctuations, making it suitable for industrial high-voltage and fluctuating power supply scenarios;

- Low cost: Low device price, extremely versatile, with significant advantages for mass production;

- Versatile functionality: Can serve as a voltage monitor, current limiter and programmable current source, offering multiple functions in a single device.

2.2.3 Limitations

- Relatively high power consumption: A minimum operating current must flow continuously; high no-load power consumption means caution is advised for low-power battery-powered devices;

- Moderate accuracy: Compared to series references, it exhibits greater temperature drift, lower initial accuracy and slightly higher output impedance;

- Complex peripheral circuitry: Must be paired with a high-precision current-limiting resistor; the precision of this resistor directly affects the overall reference accuracy.

2.2.4 Typical Devices and Application Scenarios

TI’s mainstream parallel references: TL431, TL432, and the TL431LI high-precision enhanced series. Primarily used for switch-mode power supply feedback regulation, industrial voltage monitoring, standard-precision ADC references, programmable current sources, constant-current LED drivers, and low-cost power supply systems.

III. Core Principles for Selection and Design

1. High-precision, low-power scenarios (instrumentation, medical equipment, high-precision ADCs): Prioritise TI series voltage references, combined with high-precision current references for bias, to ensure system sampling accuracy;

2. Low-cost, wide-voltage, general-purpose voltage regulation scenarios (switch-mode power supplies, industrial monitoring, general-purpose drivers): Prioritise parallel references such as the TL431, which allow for flexible configuration of voltage and current output circuits;

3. Constant-current drive applications: For small-signal precision constant-current applications, use dedicated current references; for high-power constant-current drives, use programmable current sources built using parallel references;

4. Special voltage scenarios (negative voltages, floating-ground references): Only parallel voltage references may be used; series references are not suitable.
